How to Create a Peaceful Yoga Space at Home (Even on a Budget!)

Hi beautiful friend,

Welcome to another blog post!

This month - especially as I’ve FINALLY just got the keys to my new flat (cue happy dance!) - I’m sharing a few ideas for creating a peaceful yoga space at home. A little corner where you can unwind, meditate, and move through your practice in your own time, your own way.

Whilst there are lots of benefits to doing yoga at a studio, doing yoga at home offers time-freedom, is cost-effective and means you can do it in your pyjamas!

You don’t need to spend much money on creating your DIY yoga space either. With these simple ideas below, you’ll have your little zen den ready in no time.

Start With the Basics

Let’s start with the basics - which is usually the best place to start.

Pick your space: It doesn’t need to be the biggest room in your home, just enough for you to move around freely. Think about who else uses the space too, as you’ll want somewhere you can feel relaxed and undisturbed. A quick test? Stand with your feet wide, stretch your arms out into a T-shape, and gently sway side to side. If you’re not bumping into anything (and you can reach your arms overhead without touching the ceiling), you’re good to go.

Grab a mat: Yoga mats come in all different styles and materials. If you’re new to yoga, opt for something budget-friendly to get you started, you can always upgrade to a higher-quality mat later on. A good mat is important as it offers grip so you’re not slipping around and also provides cushioning so you’re not kneeling straight onto your hardwood floors or getting friction burn from your carpet.

Clear the clutter: A tidy space = a calmer mind. Even just tucking things into a basket or drawer can help shift the energy of the space. (As my mum always says: “tidy room, tidy mind.” She’s not wrong.)

Decorate the Space

Now I’m not saying you need to decorate your whole room (unless you’re looking for an excuse, in which case full permission granted). But a few simple touches can go a long way in setting your space apart as your own little peaceful corner.

And just to say: this doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive. Use what you have, and add bits over time if it feels good.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • A cosy blanket for Savasana (especially lovely in the winter months)

  • An inspirational print or two on the wall

  • A lush green plant or a vase of fresh flowers to lift your mood

You might also want a small basket to store your yoga props - things like blocks, a strap, a bolster, or a meditation cushion. I also like to keep a notebook and pen nearby for those post-practice thoughts and emotions that bubble up.

P.S. Speaking of journaling... I’ve been working on something special behind the scenes - a 30-Day Yoga Journal to help you explore your thoughts, feelings, and insights that come up on the mat. I’ll be sharing more in next month’s blog, so stay tuned!

Set the Mood

Creating a peaceful yoga space isn’t just about what you see, it’s about how the space makes you feel. Think: soft, soothing, and sensory. The five senses help anchor us in the present moment, so here’s how you can gently awaken each one in your at-home practice.

Smell: Light a candle, burn some incense, or pop on your favourite essential oil blend. No fancy scents? Crack a window and let in the fresh air - it works wonders.

Sound: Play some gentle instrumental music or nature sounds - crashing waves, chirping birds, or a soft crackling fire. (There are loads of beautiful options on YouTube for free.)

Sight: Choose soft lighting for a relaxing feel, or let in natural sunlight for a little mood boost.

Taste: Brew yourself a herbal tea to sip after Savasana. I’m loving Yogi Tea’s turmeric chai right now - it’s like a warm hug in a mug

Touch: Wear soft, breathable fabrics that move with you. Keep a cosy blanket nearby for extra comfort - especially in the colder months.

Bonus: Journal Prompt

If you fancy trying a little journaling after your practice, here’s a gentle prompt to begin with:

1. After practicing yoga in my home space, what thoughts, feelings, or sensations came up?

2. How can I carry the peace I feel here into the rest of my day?

If you’ve never journaled before, don’t worry, it’t not about writing perfectly . Just try putting pen to paper and see what flows, one word, one breath at a time!

In Conclusion

As you can see, creating a peaceful home yoga space doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated, just a little thought, care, and intention. I hope you find your own slice of calm at home, and I can’t wait to see what you create!

I’d love to see your home yoga setups! Drop your photos or ideas in the comments - your space might just inspire someone else.
